Physical computer servers typically only have a small local disk to hold the operating system and other disks for other OS related tasks like system recovery, swap or page file (virtual memory), temporary filesystems (in Linux systems), etc. but software, application or database files are typically stored on shared storage arrays, e.g. SAN or NAS type systems and are connected to the server by fiber optic connections to minimize connectivity latency.
