The Operating system on a computer or server runs all of your software, services and applications and coordinates the logical layers of these services to execute them on the physical hardware. This diagram shows the core brain of the OS which is called the kernel interacting with the logical and physical layers of the machine and applications. There are several well know operating systems including Microsoft Windows and Redhat Enterprise Linux.
